Position Overview:

The Livestock Welfare Specialist is responsible for driving the health of over 2,000 sheep and goats, establishing standard care practices, and training grazing staff in animal doctoring and care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creates and manages routine care plan for all animals
  • Establishes standard animal care practices and clear safety standards when working with livestock
  • Works closely with grazing manager and operations supervisor to create long-term flock and herd management plan regarding size, genetics, and culling
  • Reports metrics on animal health and numbers to grazing manager at established intervals
  • Procures feed, bedding, veterinary and livestock management supplies
  • Maintains animal records regarding inventory, breeding, lambing/kidding, and veterinary care
  • Ensures bio-security standards are met by all staff in all operations
  • Advises on-site livestock mobilizations and care
  • Is on-call for animal care emergencies
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Range Management, Sustainable Agriculture, or related fields; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of livestock nutrition experience.
  • A passion for the ability to impact the national agricultural systems by producing high quality meat proteins while serving valuable ecological functions.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with data management software.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and perform livestock duties on uneven terrain.
  • Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, reach, and move as needed to complete livestock care duties.
  • Able to work long hours, including early mornings, late evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Prolonged periods of time working in varying weather conditions
